Moerbei 2008 vintage
The 2008 White Gold (Chardonnay/Semillon) has just been released – a little fruiter and crisper than the 2007 but with plenty of buttery vanilla tones too. The 2008 Sable (Shiraz) is soon to be released and will continue in the same bold style as the 2007.

Wine listings
Moerbei’s wines have been listed by UK online wine retailer Nakedwines, which specialises in representing boutique wineries producing hand-crafted wines. Some of the comments from Naked’s customers:

‘Really scared to tell you how good this is as there is only a limited amount available, but have placed a follow up order so here is something you might drink and think you have died and gone to heaven.’ Moerbei White Gold.

‘This is the finest wine I have ever tried. To begin with the smell is phenominal (sic). I found it hard to start drinking as I was too preoccupied smelling its fruity aroma. Then the drinking commenced. My god. Rich dark cherry, and the strength is potent but not overpowering. A must try, but maybe not during the summer.’ Moerbei Sable.

2010 Harvest
All is looking good for the coming harvest under the watchful eyes of vineyard manager, Lodewyk Visser, and his team. Most of our grapes will as usual go to a few local wineries, like Spier, for inclusion in their top ranges. Again, we will keep a small proportion back. This year, to add to our other wines, we will be making a Bordeaux blend (Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot) from grapes picked from our award-winning blocks. Planned production this year is about 10 000 bottles.

Calling all owls
A year ago we placed about nine owl nesting boxes throughout the property and it’s paying off! We have since seen a definite increase in the owl population on the farm. Owl breeds that may be found in this area include the Cape eagle owl and the barn owl.

Indigenous shade
Lodewyk and his team have also been busy planting our first batch of white stinkwood trees. These beautiful deciduous trees are indigenous to the area and can grow up to 25 metres tall. They have been planted along the small road towards the farm gates and, once fully grown, will shade visitors on the way in!
